The Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shan Hai Jing) records:

“In the land of Baimin there is Chenghuang.

It resembles a fox, bears horns upon its back, and whoever rides it shall live for two thousand years.”

Later texts confirm Chenghuang’s divine nature, calling it a sacred steed of Heaven whose arrival is an omen of peace, prosperity, and righteous rule.
