Among its many roles in legend, the Qingniao is best known as the messenger of the Queen Mother of the West, one of the most revered goddesses in Chinese mythology.

It is said that whenever the great goddess was about to descend into the human world, the Qingniao would arrive first—crossing mountains and heavens to deliver her message.
